Overview

Knowlej is an education platform designed to improve attendance, academic performance, and emotional well-being in K–12 students. I was responsible for designing the MVP for the student experience, with a focus on engagement, gamification, and accessibility across diverse age groups.

Problem

Students often struggle with motivation and consistency when it comes to school attendance and academic participation. Existing school platforms lacked interactivity, real-time feedback, and emotional support tools.

The challenge was to design a solution that could engage students through personalized goals, positive reinforcement, and clear progress tracking—without overwhelming them.

My Role

I worked as the UI/UX designer for the student-side MVP of the Knowlej platform. My responsibilities included:

  • Designing the student dashboard and core feature flows
    • Creating UI components for gamified systems like streaks and XP
      • Collaborating with the product and engineering teams to ensure feasibility
        • Supporting onboarding and login experiences (including QR and access code flow)

          Process

          Research & Planning

We started by identifying core user motivations across age groups. Key motivators included recognition, progress tracking, and personalized experiences. I translated these insights into feature priorities like streaks, XP, and avatar customization.

          Wireframing

I designed wireframes for each module, including:

          • Daily SEL check-ins
            • Financial portfolio tracker
              • Streak and reward systems
                • Personalized avatars and profile badges
                  • Weekly and monthly progress summaries

We kept flows short and interactions simple to maintain usability across age levels.

                    UI Design

Visual design focused on familiarity and engagement. Younger students were offered playful avatars and colors, while older students experienced a more structured interface.

Key modules were designed to be interactive but low-friction, with all progress visualized through charts, meters, and progress bars.

                    Final Design

The student dashboard included the following:

                    • Interactive Financial Portfolio – A pie chart to help students track scholarships, gift cards, and grants
                      • Streak-Based Motivation – Daily, weekly, and monthly streaks with bonus rewards
                        • Challenges: Learn to Earn / Attend to Win – Academic and attendance-based engagement modules
                          • SEL Check-In System – Simple daily mood inputs, backed by optional anonymized insights for educators
                            • Leveling & Badges – XP, level-ups, and achievements to promote habit-building
                              • Weekly Progress Summary – Auto-generated performance reports and goal-setting guidance

                                Outcomes

                                • Simplified experience across a complex set of modules
                                  • Delivered high-fidelity UI for multiple roles including student, parent, and school dashboards
                                    • Supported design of onboarding and login flow with both QR and access code logic
                                      • Built a scalable system for gamification that can grow with the platform

                                        Learnings

                                        • Designing for K–12 requires balancing fun, clarity, and structure
                                          • Gamification is most effective when tied to real data and visible progress
                                            • Emotional engagement features (like SEL) are just as important as academic ones
